I-29 Southbound Shut Down Near River Due to Bridge Incident
December 30, 2024
Traffic on I-29 and I-35 Southbound came to a standstill earlier this evening as police responded to an unfolding situation involving a man attempting to commit suicide on a bridge near the river. According to witnesses and scanner reports, the man was believed to be in crisis and contemplating self-harm. Police were able to prevent the man from taking his own life.
The incident sparked immediate responses from local law enforcement and first responders, who closed the southbound lanes to ensure public safety while engaging with the individual.
Shane , a resident of Green Hills, noted in a neighborhood discussion that reports of the situation were "all over the scanners," identifying the man as a potential suicide risk. Updates shared by community members indicated that authorities were able to de-escalate the situation successfully.
Kristen of Hills of Oakmont confirmed, "They got him down before he did anything to harm himself." This news brought relief to many in the community, including Larry from Sherrydale, who remarked, "Thank goodness. With as crazy as this world has gotten, it's enough to drive just about anyone over the edge."
The rescue brought mixed reactions of gratitude and reflection. Janet of Davidson added, "Thank God they saved him from jumping. Now we need to pray for God to help him so he doesn’t try something again. This is a hard time of year for so many people."
Traffic resumed a few hours later, but delays lingered as responders cleared the area. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the mental health struggles that many face, particularly during the holiday season.
