Local Concerns Arise Over Proposed 1% Sales Tax Increase in Liberty.

In a recent City Council meeting, concerns were raised over a proposed 1% sales tax increase that could push Liberty, MO's total sales tax rate over 10%. The issue has sparked significant community debate, particularly due to the tax's lack of a sunshine law, preventing legislative oversight or future repeal.

During the meeting, which can be accessed here starting at the 18-minute mark, city officials discussed the implications of the tax alongside a potential property tax hike. This move comes amid Liberty's steady annual growth rate of 2.5%.
The Mayor outlining his vision for the city, has faced opposition following the recent abandonment of the Activity Center project. Many residents are skeptical of further taxation without clear plans for community benefit.
This tax increase will have a significant impact on residents. With our sales tax potentially exceeding 10%, it's crucial for all voters to understand the implications and voice their concerns.
In the 2024 general election, approximately 30,000 voters from districts 16, 17, and 38 participated, whereas only around 7,000 voted in the local midterm elections. This discrepancy underscores the importance of civic engagement in shaping local policies.
