Parkville’s Landmarks Get a Makeover: (Because Who Needs the Old Ones?)
This one comes to us by way of Joyce KC
PARKVILLE, MO — Hold on to your hats, Parkville. Downtown is about to get a “refresh,” and two historic landmarks are leading the charge in this inevitable transformation. That’s right, the iconic Frank’s Italian Restaurant and the Parkville Power Plant are about to become something entirely different — because who doesn’t love a good reinvention?
First up, the beloved Frank’s Italian Restaurant at 100 Main St., a place that’s been serving locals since 1931, is getting a new life (well, sort of). After nearly two decades in the same spot, it’s time for the old space to evolve. Brian Mertz, the developer behind Parkville’s Creekside mixed-use development, has big plans for the 2,200-square-foot building. And while Frank’s served as a local staple, Mertz is now in talks with local restaurant groups to bring in something new, because what could possibly be more exciting than losing an iconic eatery and replacing it with... something else? According to Mertz, his goal is “saving Parkville,” which, of course, totally involves reshaping the past to suit future visions.
Meanwhile, across the street, the Parkville Power Plant, another gem of local history (and home to a string of ever-changing restaurants), is about to undergo yet another transformation. This time, it’s being handed over to the Parkville VFW Post 7356, which purchased the building in November. The Power Plant, which once served as a home for eateries, will soon be hosting public events, which sounds suspiciously like “just another event space” in the making. But hey, at least it’ll still be a venue for people to gather — because who wouldn’t want to visit a space that’s been reimagined for the 57th time?
So, as Parkville’s “historic” sites continue their ever-changing reinventions, it’s clear the downtown area is evolving — whether we like it or not. Keep your eyes peeled for these exciting new chapters, as long as you don’t mind the fact that we’re slowly erasing the charm of what once was.
